Planning a Maine Genealogy Trip - Laurel Hill Cemetery
Wed, May 4, 2011 at 5:20 PM I'm in the beginning stages of planning a trip up to Portland, Maine. This trip is MAINLY to celebrate my 2 year wedding anniversary, but I also have some family roots in the area and I can't not check it out! A brief overview of who I'm pursuing. Now that I've figured out who I will be "visiting" in Maine...it's time to figure out the where...
My first definitive objective is to visit Laurel Hill Cemetery in Saco, Maine
I found this death record on ancestry.com for my 4x great grandmother Tamar Wentworth Tarbox. It says she was born in Buxton Me and died in Saco, ME October 27, 1893 at the age of 80.
Parents are Ebenezer Wentworth and Sarah Woodman, both of Buxton, ME. Father's occupation: Stone Mason
Place of Burial: Laurel Hill Cemetery
I gave the cemetery a call and they were very helpful. They did a quick computer search of their records and found Tamar's burial plot. They also found a record for my 4x great grandfather Nathan Tarbox, buried right there with her. This was a double yay because I didn't know when Nathan died and their record has "Nathaniel" not "Nathan"....more questions :) I'm also hoping to find a few others in the cemetery...
*I'd be willing to take 2 or 3 picture requests! If you know of an ancestor buried in Laurel Hill Cemetery, send me an email with the information and I'll do my best to get a picture for you.
This trip will also be a time when the hubs and I will be celebrating our 2 year wedding anniversary! I'm a total beach bum and he likes the shade. One thing we both love to do while we travel, EAT. We've never been to the area so please send any suggestions of restaurants, lobster musts, home town spots near the Buxton, Biddeford/Saco, Old Orchard Beach, or Portland area. If there is a place you love please share!! Also- if anyone has any experience with genealogical or historical research in these areas or share your tips, suggestions, and experiences!
More Maine developments to come...
